"You here in the Philippines, you are very lucky. You live in a spectacular place. However, sadly, many plants and animals are threatened with extinction because of the actions of us humans. We need to change our ways because extinction is forever. Once it’s gone, it’s gone."
- Herpetologist Dr. Brady Barr, on Philippine wildlife ** Barr studies reptiles and amphibians. He has hosted over 100 documentaries for National Geographic and is planning to spend the next few years in Asia to concentrate on the region’s wildlife.

‘Kinse’ filmmakers bag 2 New York awards
Kinse. 15 stories. 15 filmmakers. One advocacy.
“KINSE” filmmakers Paolo Villaluna and Raymund Amonoy bagged two New York festival medals with the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) documentary show “Storyine.”
Villaluna directs and edits the series he co-created with journalist Pat Evangelista. Amonoy shoots “Storyline’s” backpack footage, and is assistand director to Villaluna.
The New York Festivals Television & Film Awards recognizes the world’s best work in advertising, TV, film and radio.
“Storyline,” the only Philippine entry this year with three nominations to its name, took a Silver World Medal for Biography and Profiles, and the Bronze World Medal in the category of Community Portraits.
“Storyline,” now on its second year, is the first current affairs show in the country without a host, relying on narrative and cinema to tell its stories.
Villaluna, also an advertising director, continues to shoot and edit the show’s weekly episodes. Evangelista, who produces “Storyline” along with ANC’s Kinse film series, writes the show’s narrative through the voices of its storytellers.
“Storyline’s” human rights slant is demonstrated in the three-episode selection that won this year’s prizes, where a small girl is given a name, a love story meets a tragic end, and a national government is held accountable for torture and murder.
“Orphan” is the story of Efren Figuracion, a struggling nurse-policeman from Mindanao, whose choice to adopt the one-month-old victim of a massacre gave a small girl a name and a man a daughter.
“Alexis & Nika” is the love story of film critic Alexis Tioseco and Slovenian film journalist Nika Bohinc, and the tragedy that ended their love affair. Narrated with a letter written two years before by Tioseco to Bohinc, the episode follows the difficulties and triumphs of a cross-cultural relationship, and mourns the loss of two of cinema’s most passionate defenders.
“Stolen” (Dukot) is the story of three men, Raymond Manalo, Jonas Burgos, and King Catoy, each one disappeared in the context of hundreds of extrajudicial killings of suspected communist rebels and supporters during the administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“Storyline” is also a finalist in the documentary Social Issues category. Other finalists include “Altar,” for promotions, the now defunct “I Survived” for Docudrama, telenovela “Dahil May Isang Ikaw” and TV Patrol’s “Bloodbath in Manila” for longform coverage of breaking news.
“Storyline” airs every Thursday at 9.30pm over ANC, with replays on Friday at 2.30pm and Sundays at 3.30pm. The series also airs on Wednesdays over ABS-CBN.

Azkals aiming higher, dreaming bigger
“To go the next level… requires more efforts, more passion in the work ethic, like it has been so far,” Weiss said in a luncheon held for the Azkals Monday at the ELJ Communications Center at the ABS-CBN Compound in Quezon City. Fresh from their victory in the AFC Challenge Cup group stage, the Azkals will now advance to the tournament which will take place on March 2012. The team will also be playing in a qualifiers home-and-away match in their World Cup 2014 campaign, with their qualifying matches to be held this June. For their future stints, Weiss said it would be best for the team to modify their game play. “We have to make adjustments, we have to train more, train harder, train more intensively,” he said.
They came, they saw, they conquered. But as the Philippine Azkals prepare to conquer more matches, Coach Hans Michael Weiss said it would definitely take more than just tough training.

Families of Pinoys on death row seek China’s mercy
Families of 3 Filipinos set to be put to death on Wednesday for drug smuggling are seeking the mercy of the Chinese government.
In a letter sent to Chinese President Hu Jintao, relatives of Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, Elizabeth Batain, and Ramon Credo said they “humbly, sincerely and desperately appeal” to Beijing to spare the lives of the 3.
The letter was signed by Marisol Ordinario, sister of Sally Ordinario; Sol Credo, wife of Ramon Credo; Fr. Rex Reyes Jr., general secretary of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines, Bro. Eddie Villanueva of the Jesus Is Lord Movement; Bishop Solito Toquero of the Ecumenical Bishops’ Forum; Bishop Nathaniel Lazaro of the Iglesia Evangelica Metodista en Las Islas Filipinas; and leaders of cause-oriented groups.
“We are profoundly grateful that the Chinese Government granted a temporary stay of their execution last February upon the representation of Vice President Jejomar Binay,” the letter said.
“We earnestly beg Your Excellency for commutation. We believe our loved ones are victims of larger drug syndicates who take advantage of the unawareness, vulnerability and desperation of our people. We are pained that they are meted the death penalty while the big true drug operators and syndicates go on wild abandon,” they added.

After Ayala Alabang, 7 Bataan barangays require prescription for condoms
Seven barangays in Balanga City in Bataan province have issued ordinances that ban the sale of condoms without a doctor’s prescription, similar to the one in barangay Ayala Alabang in Muntinlupa City. These are:
The 7 barangay captains gave copies of the ordinances to Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III before the closing of an anti-RH (Reproductive Health) bill rally over the weekend, said Catholic Bishop Ruperto Santos of Balanga, as reported by The Philippine Daily Inquirer. Labor group Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) has condemned the barangay captains’ latest move, saying that “women, men, parents and couples have the right to decide which contraceptives to use.” ”The need for prescription undermines the right of residents in these barangays to contraceptives. In the first place, the need for prescription to purchase condoms and pills is baseless,” PM secretary general Judy Ann Miranda said in a statement.

Philippines is 3rd top country most hit by disasters in 2010
The Philippines ranked third in the list of countries most hit by natural disasters in 2010, a report from the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center said. A total of 14 natural disasters visited the country last year, placing the country at 3rd next to India with 16 and China with 22. The number was down by 46% from the 26 disasters in 2009, which then included the deadly tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng. The Philippines topped the list then.

Azkals don't cause earthquakes: Etheridge
These coincidences led many to say in jest that earthquakes seem to hit when the Azkals are around. And now that they are back in the country, jokes are now circulating that the Philippines might be hit next. Filipino-British goal keeper Neil Etheridge simply shrugged off the teasing as he pointed out that earthquakes are something that cannot be predicted. “You can’t predict anything. It’s an act of nature. It’s an act of God. You carry on with your days as normal as possible,” he said. “I take things as they go. I got a flight back to London tomorrow evening. If anything was to occur, then it occurs.”When the Philippine Azkals were in Japan for training, a major earthquake and huge tsunami struck that country. Another earthquake rocked Myanmar as it was hosting the Challenge Cup group where Azkals were one of the challengers.

Consumers face bus fare, oil price hikes
From P9, the minimum fare for ordinary buses will now be P10, and the fare for air-conditioned buses will increase to P12 from P11. The rates for every succeeding kilometer will stay the same at P1.85 for ordinary and P2.20 for air-conditioned. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved the adjustments, but clarified these are only provisional or temporary. The LTFRB will hold a hearing within 30 days to discuss a petition filed by the Integrated Bus Operators Association (InterBOA) for the P5 and P6 increases in the minimum fares for ordinary and air-conditioned buses, respectively.
After increases in jeepney and taxi fares, buses in Metro Manila will also charge passengers an additional P1 starting Tuesday, March 29, amid rising fuel prices.
